How Biochar Absorbs Odors

Created for and Master Gardeners & Pros.
Biochar Applications

Are you tired of unpleasant odors in your garden, yard, or outdoor spaces? Discover the eco-friendly solution with biochar. This versatile, carbon-rich material not only absorbs and eliminates odors but also offers numerous benefits for soil health and the environment. Learn how biochar can transform your outdoor areas and contribute to a healthier, more pleasant environment.

Odors Biochar Can Eliminate

  • Cigarette Smoke: Cigarette smoke can linger in a home or building for weeks or months, and the toxins can stay on fabrics for over a year. Biochar absorbs these toxins and removes the smell.
  • Food Odors: Biochar is proven to absorb strong smells like swine manure and dairy lagoons. It can easily handle food waste odors in your home.
  • Trash Odors: Biochar can also neutralize strong trash odors in both household and commercial bins.

Applications of Biochar

In the Soil: Biochar sequesters carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas most responsible for global warming and climate change. For every pound of biochar used, two pounds of CO₂ are sequestered. Plus, it also improves soil fertility and structure. Additionally, it enhances disease resistance, retains water and nutrients, improves drainage and aeration, and provides a cozy habitat for beneficial microbes.

Above the Soil: Along with odor removal, biochar works wonders in restoring degraded soils. It also treats wastewater and adsorbs heavy metals and toxins. Moreover, it reduces gas emissions such as methane and ammonia from manure lagoons. Biochar is truly a versatile and friendly helper for a healthier environment!

How to Apply Biochar

  • Houseplants: Top dress the soil with biochar and water it.
  • Trees and Shrubs: Mix biochar into 10% of the soil around the root zone and keep it moist for 5-7 days.
  • New Lawns: Incorporate biochar into the top 2-4 inches of soil and keep it moist for 5-7 days.
  • Gardens: Mix biochar into the top 4-6 inches of soil and maintain moisture for 5-7 days.

By using biochar, you can naturally and effectively manage odors and improve both soil health and the environment.
