Midsummer Garden Tips: Rejuvenate Your Garden with Biochar

Created for Experienced Gardener and Master Gardeners & Pros.
Gardening Tips

Midsummer is the perfect time to give your garden the attention it needs to thrive during the warmest months of the year. With the right care and a little help from biochar products, your garden can remain lush and vibrant well into the fall. Here are some midsummer garden tips to rejuvenate your garden, featuring the benefits of biochar.

When is midsummer?

Midsummer typically refers to the middle of the summer season. In the Northern Hemisphere, this generally falls around June and July. Specifically, midsummer often encompasses the period from late June to early August. The exact timing can vary depending on local climate and cultural interpretations, but it is commonly associated with the summer solstice, which occurs around June 21st.

Refresh Your Soil

By midsummer, garden soil can become compacted and depleted of essential nutrients. This is where biochar comes in handy. Biochar improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention. Simply mix biochar into your soil to boost its health and provide a hospitable environment for your plants’ roots.

Boost Nutrient Levels

Biochar not only improves soil structure but also enhances its nutrient-holding capacity. When combined with compost or organic fertilizers, biochar helps retain these nutrients in the root zone, making them readily available for plants. This results in healthier growth and more bountiful yields.

Manage Weeds Naturally With Biochar

Weeds can be a major issue during midsummer. Biochar can help suppress weed growth by improving soil health and encouraging strong plant growth, which in turn outcompetes the weeds. Additionally, biochar can be used as a mulch to prevent weed seeds from germinating.

Compost + Biochar

If you’re composting, consider adding biochar to your compost pile. Biochar accelerates the composting process by providing a habitat for beneficial microorganisms. This results in richer, more nutrient-dense compost that can be used to further improve your garden soil.

For best results, incorporate biochar into your garden soil by mixing it thoroughly at a rate of about 10-15% by volume. This can be done during planting or as a top dressing for existing plants. Regular use of biochar will enhance soil quality over time, making it an integral part of your gardening routine.

Happy Summer!
