Municipal wastewater remediation using biochar

Download: Removal of Micropollutants in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants by Powder Activated Carbon

An essential part of municipal wastewater plants is eliminating micropollutants in wastewater. This experiment, conducted at Swiss water plants, proved the effectiveness of powder-activated carbon (biochar) in absorbing and eliminating these harmful substances. In the trials, different amounts of biochar were employed in addition to preexisting filtration and counter-current systems. In one trial, wastewater sludge was treated with biochar directly. The results showed that biochar increased micropollutant elimination in wastewater to almost 100% for all substances.
