An essential part of municipal wastewater plants is eliminating micropollutants in wastewater. This experiment, conducted at Swiss water plants, proved the effectiveness of powder-activated carbon (biochar) in absorbing and eliminating these harmful substances. In the trials, different amounts of biochar were employed in addition to preexisting filtration and counter-current systems. In one trial, wastewater sludge was treated with biochar directly. The results showed that biochar increased micropollutant elimination in wastewater to almost 100% for all substances.
