Biochar is a great tool for absorbing toxins, heavy metals, and bacteria. This is especially important when looking to filter stormwater, which, especially in urban environments, tends to carry these harmful substances from land to water sources or back to soil. In this experiment published by Elsevier, biochar was mixed with sand to create a more natural biofilter to remove E. coli from stormwater.
